As strange as it may sound, I believe voting for UnstoppableDomains over at NamePros a is in our best interest as domainers more so than in theirs.
Sounds weird?
It’s actually quite simple.
After two decades in this space, I can say that a lot of times, domainers do themselves a disservice by being too selfish. Just take, take, take. But when the time comes to give back… crickets.
Even when giving back is as simple as clicking on a link so as to go to NamePros, then logging in and voting. 30 seconds of your time… a minute, maybe?
Now you might be quick to say “Well what’s the problem, Andrei, isn’t it their right to do whatever they want?” … to which my answer is that yes, it sure is.
But ironically, the exact same people who view things in such as selfish manner then complain that a certain behemoth company dominates this industry like there’s no tomorrow.
Maybe the two realities are interconnected?
That one company has become uber-dominant precisely because the industry has consistently been too lazy or selfish to encourage ambitious newcomers?
I think the key lies here. UnstoppableDomains.com came to this industry with the best of intentions and put their money where their mouth is, in the most literal sense possible. I am convinced that most of the people reading this post have saved at least *some* money thanks to them. $xx,xxx in my case, savings that I passed right on to people who buy from me wholesale via DadDomains.com… do you think I would be able to keep prices at $14-$20 and still afford to eat otherwise? Nope. And I know people who have also saved well into the 5 figures thanks to them, let’s not even talk about $x,xxx and below.
Have they all voted?
Nope because again, the “take, take, take” mentality is unfortunately still at play.
And it’s not just the money but also the fact that while domainers play a minuscule role when it comes to the behemoth of this industry’s bottom line, Unstoppable has always had a strong grassroots presence. They listened to domainers, implemented awesome stuff like LTO for their landers with down payments (which Afternic STILL doesn’t have btw!) and generally treated us like kings.
Fortunately, it’s not too late.
You can click HERE and vote for UnstoppableDomains until the 31st if I’m not mistaken. Not because they’re perfect, not because the other companies suck but rather because as an industry, we will be failing miserably by not encouraging a company that did more for domainers than any other entity since the days of Frank Schilling’s DomainNameSales and Uniregistry.
I truly hope people will listen and literally vote the minute they finish reading this, to make sure they don’t forget. I guess a case could be made that it’s also a form of selfishness (doing it in the longer-term interest of the domain space and in our own best interest, ultimately) but at least one that’s win-win and smart 😉
